Chapter 11

‘Eclipse of the Heart’

The next few days flew by without much fuss. I visited with Mags but other than that I stayed in my room. Every night my dreams became more muted. The first night the door to the rose room was shut off by an invisible barrier. I could feel my Shadow on the other side reaching for me. I was locked all alone in the hall looking out at the burning world.

Leo was a new constant in my dreams. Some nights he was physically there, others it was just his presence. It was like since he had bonded to me, the bond I had with the Elder was slowly being severed. Like Leo’s blood was literally burning him from me.

Tomorrow was the auction. I tried not to think about it but the fear was gnawing at me. Leo had not been to visit me in person since he saved me from the King. I couldn’t count on him saving me. What was I thinking? Did I really want to be in his company? I didn’t even know him. It was just the blood bond drawing me to him, or maybe I could sympathize with his broken soul.

I currently sat in a chair looking out of the window. Fat drops of water hit the window pane. I have always loved the rain. It made me think of my girls. They loved playing in puddles and dancing without a care in the world. My heart clenched at the thought of them. Mags had told me that she had no luck locating them anywhere at all, so I had to assume they were still on the run with Caleb and Danielle.

I heard a knock on the door. Knowing it was just Baylor bringing my dinner I watched as he walked in and set the tray of food down on my nightstand. He looked a little disheveled and made a small bow before rushing out of the room. Then it happened. The door pushed back. I waited for Baylor to pull it back shut and lock the door, but it never happened. I quickly got up and pulled on the door myself. Sure enough it was open.

I quickly ran to the closet and threw on the clothes I thought would blend in the best. A strapless green dress that was corseted at the top with a high-low bottom. Gems sparkled across the low neckline showing ample cleavage. I paired the dress with some insanely high heels. There was very simple makeup left in my room so I threw on some red lipstick and mascara quickly before heading back to the door.

I peeked my head out to find the hallway empty. I had never thought of running away before but that is because it seemed impossible. With the impending auction maybe I was getting a little more ballsy. I walked out of my room shutting the door behind me. My heart was racing and I knew I needed to get myself under control or any vampire would be able to tell something was wrong.
